Craniosacral therapy
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle manual method with light physical contact used as a stimulation technique to activate and support a person's entire nervous system for the potential of powerful self-regulation. The methods support a person's innate healing ability to release tensions, blockages, and other limitations in or around the system, allowing the entire body to restore its original vitality and functions.
Craniosacral therapy has a profound effect on your entire organism, creating a higher balance between the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of the individual. When the overall state of the body shifts to higher levels of balance, many health conditions can improve, such as:
- Back, neck, shoulder, leg, and pelvic issues
- Jaw joint problems
- ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
- Fibromyalgia
- Post-Covid-19 Syndrome / Post-Covid-19 Vaccine Syndrome
- Headaches/migraines
- Dizziness, tinnitus
- Whiplash
- Symptoms of fatigue, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS
- Stress-related symptoms
- Imbalances in the hormonal system
- Immune system and autoimmune issues
- Sleep disturbances
- Acute injuries, including accidents, childbirth trauma, sports injuries, etc.
- Post-surgery
- Emotional trauma
- Autism spectrum disorders such as Autism, ADHD, and other neuropsychological conditions
- Concentration difficulties
- Low mood, mild to moderate depression
- Impaired nerve function and nerve damage
- Childbirth trauma, prenatal, and neonatal difficulties
- Preventive care for neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer's and Dementia
Clinical practice has demonstrated specific effects on many unexplained, diffuse pain conditions, chronic pain, nonspecific neurological disorders, and nonspecific issues in children.
Background and Development of Craniosacral Therapy
All forms of craniosacral therapy have fundamental osteopathic principles, seeing the client as a whole, not a collection of separate parts, and that health is always present. However, craniosacral therapists can develop their own specific modules, skills, and styles to best support the client's self-healing for better health.
Originating from Osteopathy by Dr. Andrew Still in the late 19th century, MD William Garner Sutherland developed Cranial Osteopathy in the early 20th century, which later formed the basis of modern craniosacral therapy. Initially, Cranial Osteopathy was only taught to osteopaths. It was introduced to the public as a profession by an American medical researcher and osteopath, Dr. John E. Upledger, with five distinct core components, under a new name, Craniosacral Therapy. These five core components are the brain and spinal cord (CNS), cerebrospinal fluid, inner meninges, cranial bones, and all the bones between the cranium and sacrum (sacral bone).
The mechanism of craniosacral therapy to change the craniosacral system has evolved from initially altering the rhythm of the semi-hydraulic cerebrospinal fluid to deeper physiological rhythmical movements since the 1970s, such as Dynamic Stillness, Breath of Life, Primary Respiration, Long Tide, Mid-Tide, etc. These interactive rhythmical forces in nature and within humans have been discovered, explored, further developed, and continuously used within the various branches of craniosacral therapy even today.
